Our mission is to inspire and empower a new generation of leaders from Afro-descendant and marginalised communities worldwide. By equipping them with the tools to embrace and embody bliss in their lives, we aim to spark a ripple effect that inspires future generations to do the same.
The LaB is dedicated to the scientific study of human flourishing (bliss) through the lens of Positive Psychology, Agapology, and Spirituality. This interdisciplinary journal seeks to advance research on the fundamental role of agape (divine love) and secure spiritual attachment in fostering well-being, resilience, and holistic thriving.
Positive Psychology: The Science of Flourishing
Rooted in Positive Psychology, this journal explores human flourishing beyond mere happiness, emphasizing a life of meaning, engagement, and well-being across physical, emotional, social, and spiritual domains. Research in this field highlights the importance of virtues, strengths, and secure relationships in achieving optimal well-being. This perspective aligns with the LOVE model, which defines the four core pillars of human flourishing:
- Linkedness – A profound sense of connection and belonging, rooted in unconditional acceptance and harmony with others, the world, and a higher power.
- Opulence – The belief in one’s worthiness to experience abundance, both materially and spiritually, while trusting in divine provision.
- Valory – A deep sense of meaning and fulfillment that arises from living a purpose-driven life in alignment with higher values.
- Equanimity – The resilience and faith required to navigate adversity, transforming hardship into opportunities for growth.
Agapology: The Study of Divine Love and its Role in Human Flourishing
As a field of study, Agapology examines the nature, characteristics, and transformative power of agape—a selfless, unconditional love that fosters deep well-being and personal growth. Unlike transactional or conditional love, agape is an enduring force that nurtures bliss and enables individuals to develop LOVE virtues. This journal seeks to deepen our understanding of how agape serves as a foundation for psychological, emotional, and spiritual flourishing.
Spirituality: Secure Attachment to a Benevolent Higher Power
Unlike religious doctrine or practice, spirituality in this context refers to a personal, secure attachment to a benevolent divine higher power or God. Research suggests that a secure spiritual relationship provides psychological safety, purpose, and resilience, particularly in the face of adversity. This journal explores how spirituality nurtures bliss, serving as a conduit for internalizing agape and actualizing LOVE virtues.
The Role of Adversity in Human Flourishing
A core focus of this journal is the positive contribution of adversity towards bliss. At the heart of this is the Differential Bliss Receptibility (DBR) Theory, which posits that adversity heightens spiritual sensitivity and receptivity to divine LOVE. Hardship fosters a longing for deeper meaning and spiritual connection, which in turn strengthens one’s capacity for agape and flourishing. Through this process, adversity becomes not merely a challenge but a transformative force that deepens one’s experience of bliss.
Our Commitment
The Journal of Agapology and Human Flourishing serves as an academic platform for rigorous inquiry into the intersection of Positive Psychology, Agapology, and Spirituality. We invite contributions that explore the pathways to human flourishing, the transformative power of divine love, and the mechanisms through which adversity cultivates spiritual growth. Our mission is to bridge the empirical and the transcendent, offering a holistic framework for understanding the science of bliss and the role of agape in the journey toward lasting well-being.
Interdisciplinary Approach:
LaB will foster interdisciplinary collaboration, involving scholars from fields like economics, theology, psychology, and social science to present holistic perspectives. For example, theological scholars can collaborate with business experts to demonstrate how ethical principles can translate into sustainable economic practices.
Call for Papers
The LaB invites submissions that bridge the gap between scholarly depth and practical accessibility. As an interdisciplinary journal, we explore the intersection of Positive Psychology, Agapology, and Spirituality, with a focus on human flourishing, resilience, and the transformative power of divine love (agape). We welcome contributions from academics, practitioners, and thought leaders who seek to advance both theoretical understanding and real-world application.
